Cock Fights (Kori Katta) - Udupi

The legendary cock fights are one of the main attractions that lure people from near and far to participate or to merely be a spectator. Although banned in many rural places, cock fights, locally known as "korida katta", are laregly prevalent and are a source of major entertainment complete with betting.

The roosters are carefully chosen by the owners. The roosters are carefully examined by the owners based on their breed, colour, physique and age. The owners of the fighting cocks tie a double edged sharp knife to one of their feet. The cocks are then aggravated, intimidated and then let into the fighting arena where the two opponents engage in a heavy fights. The fight ends when one of the rooster is dead, gravely injured or escapes the arena. The losing owner has to hand over his injured or dead rooster to the winning team. In rare cases, when both the participating are dead, the owners are asked to exchange their dead roosters.

Korida katta being very popular among the locals invites large bets, and the prizes for the winning team are equally impressive!
