Barkur

Barkur, situated 17 km from Udupi and 6 km from Brahmavara, is an ancient village steeped in history and myth, positioned on the banks of the serene river Sita in coastal Karnataka. Once a thriving center under the Alupa rulers, Barkur later served as a regional capital during the reigns of the Hoysala and Vijayanagar dynasties, showcasing its importance in the history of the region.

Barkur was known for its grandeur and extensive network of settlements. The village was comprised of ten distinct settlements, each featuring its own lake and temple. It is believed that at one time, Barkur boasted an impressive 365 temples, symbolizing a sacred site for each day of the year. The king, considered deeply devoted, would visit one temple daily, underscoring the village’s spiritual and cultural prominence. Today, only a few of these temples and the remnants of the lakes remain, serving as poignant reminders of the village’s glorious past.

The Legend of Bhutala Pandya

One of the most captivating stories connected to Barkur is that of Bhutala Pandya. This legend tells of Deva Pandya, a merchant from Tamil Nadu who built a ship in Barkur. The story takes a mystical turn when a spirit named Kundodara demanded a human sacrifice to appease the gods. Deva Pandya, determined to fulfill the demand, offered his son Jayapandya as a sacrifice. However, Kundodara, recognizing the boy's noble lineage and purity, spared him. In a twist of fate, Jayapandya was crowned Bhutala Pandya, becoming the ruler of Barkur.

Bhutala Pandya’s legacy includes the introduction of the "Aliya Katu" law, which stated that the son-in-law would inherit the estate, a unique tradition that spread across the region and left a lasting mark on local customs and governance.
